Pronouns: He/Him/His and They/Them/Their
I’m Henry (he/they), a queer, non-binary East Asian immigrant who was born in Hong Kong, grew up in New Zealand and is living in New York City. Before becoming a therapist, I spent seven years in the tech world as a software engineer and product manager, building products ranging from online classrooms to digital voice assistants that touch hundreds of millions of people. My focus has since shifted to decolonizing the field of mental health and facilitating deeper, transformative change in people’s lives amidst a backdrop of oppressive, capitalist systems. As a triathlete, Ironman and a trail runner, I also bring the power, endurance and resilience of the human mind and body into the therapeutic space, focusing on restoring connections between mind, body and nature.
Traditional Western concepts of mental health fail to capture the realities of marginalized communities, leaving behind those who need support the most. Being both queer and Chinese, I witness and experience firsthand the lack of personalized, affirming care for our communities which face a vast array of challenges such as shame, internalized inferiority, conflicts in cultural and familial values, and racial stereotyping and fetishization. I strive to provide a space where we honor the vast complexity of your lived experiences and navigate together the intersecting systems of oppression and privilege that shape our experiences every day.
I draw from a mix of orientations such as humanistic, existential and acceptance-and-commitment therapy, as well as queer, sex-positive, trauma-informed and liberation approaches. This allows me to tailor our work in an integrative way to meet your unique needs and goals. My areas of expertise include acculturative stress, immigration and racial issues, internalized inferiority or superiority, self-worth and self-image, shame, gender & sexual identity exploration, more than monogamy and polyamory, sexual racism and diverse sexual experiences including kink and BDSM.
If my eclectic approach and expertise appeals to you, I invite you to begin the next chapter of your healing journey with me. Together, we’ll explore the unique intersections of your life, dismantle internalized shame and work towards a more authentic and empowered you. Let’s get started.
